Fritz Variation (5...Nd4)

A tricky variation where Black moves the knight to d4 instead of recapturing. Sets up tactical threats against c2 and f3.

Move-by-Move Analysis

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 - See Knight Attack introduction.

5...Nd4 - The Fritz Variation! Instead of recapturing on d5 or retreating to a5, Black moves the knight to an aggressive square, threatening both the c2 pawn and the Nf3.

The idea is ...Nxf3+ followed by ...Qe7+ or ...Qd7, exploiting the pin on the knight.

6.c3 - The main response. White attacks the knight and opens the c2 square. After 6...Nxf3+ 7.Qxf3 Qxd5, Black has won back the pawn with an equal position.

Lichess Masters statistics: White 65 / Draw 29 / Black 42 (6% of games after 5.exd5)

White's plans: Play c3 to challenge the knight. If Black exchanges on f3, White gets the bishop pair.

Black's plans: Exchange on f3 and recover the pawn with ...Qxd5. Or keep the knight on d4 and create tactical threats.

Assessment

The Fritz Variation is playable but slightly dubious at the highest level. White gets good compensation for the pawn after c3. However, it's a useful surprise weapon for online play.
